Review – Mark Knopfler

@ Newcastle Metro Radio Arena, May 22 2010

Picture the scene. The auditorium is plunged into darkness, the crowd breaks into applause and then the spotlights shine on two musicians – a flautist and a fiddler.

Meanwhile, the star of the show shyly waves to his hometown audience before sitting down in his seat at the front of the stage.

Not the typical entrance for a guitar hero but, then again, Mark Knopfler is not your typical axeman. Read the rest of this entry »

RJD Remembered

When we heard Tony Iommi had revived the classic Dio-era Black Sabbath line-up as a touring entity we literally jumped for joy.

And we were fortunate to witness a fabulous show at Newcastle’s Arena in the autumn of 2007 with Ronnie in fantastic form.

As we pay tribute to one of the finest singers in rock and metal history here’s rushonrock editor Simon Rushworth’s interview with Iommi prior to those UK shows. “Tony was so excited about playing live with Ronnie again and playing all of the early 80s classics,” recalls Rushworth. “They were a match made in metal heaven.” Read the rest of this entry »

Review – Kiss

@ Newcastle Metro Radio Arena, May 2 2010

When God gave rock and roll to us one of the bands he surely earmarked for blind worship was Kiss.

This moving Sunday service in Newcastle might not have seen the largest congregation ever to grace the city’s cavernous arena but the faith, if not the ticket sales, was strong.

And thanks to a sensational sermon lasting more than two hours those who did choose to pay homage at the church of Kiss were treated to pure rock heaven.

But the sad thing is that it’s doubtful we’ll see the like again – at least on Tyneside. A business like Kiss simply can’t afford to play to half empty venues and the frowns across the faces of the stream of staff emerging from stage right before and during the show said it all. Review – Bad Company & Joe Perry

@ Metro Radio Arena, April 7 2010

According to David Coverdale, the other Teessider with a prime set of pipes, it’s Good To Be Bad. Well it’s even better to be Bad Company.

This was, quite possibly, the best rock and roll show Newcastle’s Arena has ever staged with a sound to savour and an emotionally charged performance par excellence. Sure there were moans and groans that Paul Rodgers and co. were on stage less than 90 minutes but the sheer quality far outweighed the limited quantity. Those who left the venue without their hairs standing on end need a lesson in appreciation – this was a special event worth every penny. Read the rest of this entry »

Rock O’ The North…Pt75

Earlier this week the mighty Bon Jovi added a further two dates to their massive summer 2010 o2 Arena residency.

And while Jon and the boys may no longer be genuine rock heroes – preferring to ‘pop out’ many years ago – it’s exciting to think a real band with real musicians can still be such a huge draw. Read the rest of this entry »

Review – Rammstein

Posted by simon On February - 5 - 2010 1 COMMENT

@ Birmingham LG Arena, February 3 2010

There is a general consensus on the grapevine that Rammstein’s latest album will be their last.  After admitted disputes over musical directions the band could be parting ways.  If so, then they certainly went out with a bang.

Rammstein had only three UK dates on their latest tour.  London, Manchester and Birmingham were lucky enough to be included and thousands flocked to see a band that has matured progressively since their last UK tour in 2005.  Read the rest of this entry »
