Beards, banjos and Brown Ale. Not exactly your average Tuesday night, but when Hayseed Dixie rolls into town it’s never going to be a conventional.

A decent crowd turned up to witness one of the most unique bands ever to grace the o2 academy stage. And once again the bluegrass band put on an outstanding display. Read the rest of this entry »

Aerosmith will co-headline Download 2010 – on the condition that Steven Tyler joins Joe Perry on the Donington stage.

That’s the incredible news rock fans are digesting tonight as the organisers of the UK’s leading roc and metal festival continue to finalise this summer’s bill.

Chart-topping angst rockers Rage Against The Machine have also been lined up to join the likes of AC/DC, Them Crooked Vultures and Mortorhead at what is fast becoming a who’s who of rock greats. And while Aerosmith with Tyler would be a massive draw it’s debatable whether the Toxic Twins can get their shit together in time for one final hurrah. Read the rest of this entry »

Aerosmith – Dude (Looks Like A Lady) (Tyler/Perry/Child) b/w Love In An Elevator (Live) (Tyler/Perry) & Walk This Way (Live) (Tyler/Perry)

1987

This was the track which confirmed Aerosmith as a credible hair metal act perfectly suited to capitalise on the MTV boom.

Steven Tyler and Joe Perry brought hitmaker supreme Desmond Child on board to beef up their late 80s songwriting and the transformation was awesome. Slick pop rock tunes combined with cutting edge video clips breathed new life into the Toxic Twins and sparked a golden era in Aerosmith’s chequered career. Read the rest of this entry »

testamentTestament – Trial By Fire (Skolnick/Peterson/Billy) b/w Nobody’s Fault (Tyler/Whitford) 1988

Taken from the album The New Order, which hit 136 on the Billboard Hot 200 and ultimately broke the band as a commercial prospect, this Testament classic still sounds massive today.

Had there been a big five when it came to thrash metal monsters breaking out of the US in the late 80s then Chuck Billy and his bombastic crew would have made the cut.

As it was the Big Four – Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax – enjoyed even greater success and remained in a superstar club all of their own. But tracks like Trial By Fire prove Testament’s class and those of us who have witnessed the band live in 2009 will testify to the fact that they’re still going strong. Read the rest of this entry »

Finland might not seem like the most natural destination for the North East’s finest new rock and roll band but a trip across the North Sea could be the making of Fables Last Stand. rushonrock editor Simon Rushworth reports.
They’ve recorded some of their most anthemic tunes at the Vancouver home of Bryan Adams, opened up for blues rock legends UFO and fellow Geordies the Quireboys and last month they finally completed the mix for debut album Love & Exile. But Fables Last Stand want more. Read the rest of this entry »

motleycrue2It feels like we’re back in the late 80s and hair metal heaven this week with new releases from the Crue (pictured), Danger Danger, Lynch Mob and House Of Lords dominating the rushonrock reviews round-up. And it feels just great.

Keeping a more traditional sound alive are the excellent Alberta Cross with their soulful 70s-influenced vibe. And then there’s those crazy dudes from Gong who deliver another slice of psychedelic prog rock just in time to celebrate the band’s 40th anniversary. Read the rest of this entry »

Long hair, like loud rock, has never been in fashion. Then again, Aussie sportsmen aren’t renowned for their good taste. Which is just as well because, in former Wimbledon champion Pat Cash, rock and metal boasts one of its most vocal supporters and an individual never afraid to nail his true colours to the mast.

A talented guitar player, the one-time darling of centre court’s female fans never fails to do his bit for the music we love by mentioning his other passion everywhere he goes. Always keen to combine his BBC-funded visit to the All England Club with a gig or two, Cash has really come up trumps in 2009. Read the rest of this entry »

It’s safe to say 11 million people can’t be wrong and when that many folk fork out for a copy of your Greatest Hits record you know you’re doing something right.

Lenny Kravitz has been doing almost everything right ever since his record label packed him off to the proving ground that is the UK music scene. Like Kings Of Leon 20 years on, America was slow to pick up on one of rock’s most eclectic talents but us Brits have always had a soft spot for one of the coolest performers on the planet. serpico-photo2Scottish newbies Serpico lead a quartet of emerging bands hoping to cash in on Bank Holiday releases this week and with their Whitley Bay headline show approaching fast it might well be worth investing in what is a cracking slab of heavy rock.

If classic rock’s more your bag then you can’t go wrong with the Kevin Shirley-produced Eden, released by identical twins Frank and Jim Paoli and their pals in Draven. Then there’s the Brummie orchestral metal of Hanging Doll and a fabulous mixed bag by the angry young things of Livid. Love new music? Love rushonrock. Read the rest of this entry »
