ufoSelf Made Man does the unthinkable this week and criticises his very own favourite band for the dog’s dinner of a record they persuaded him to buy not once, but twice. And how many times have we warned him not to go on Amazon after a night on the real ale…

DRR logo smallNorthern stars Dirty Rock And Roll have contacted rushonrock to explain that tomorrow night’s Head Of Steam gig has been cancelled.

Adam, Lee and Steve were due to return to one of their fave live haunts this week as one of four hard rocking acts billed to appear at the Newcastle venue.

But the plug has been pulled on DRnR’s appearance and now fans will have to wait until October 6 to see the trio in action when Gateshead’s Three Tuns hosts the hard rocking heroes. If you’re still looking for a gig on Wednesday don’t forget The Used play Northumbria Uni…

innerpartysystemUS dance rock deviants Innerpartysystem have broken their silence on a bitter parting of the ways from major label Island and pledged to use the break as the dawn of an exciting new era for the band’s fans.

Despite heaping praise on a minority of Island staff – including those who spent time backing the band’s push in the UK – there appears to be little love lost between the pretenders to Pendulum’s throne and their erstwhile employers. Read the rest of this entry »

europe newEnduring melodic rock greats Europe get back into the swing of releasing some of the finest music money can buy this summer when mini album Last Look At Eden hits stores.

Out five weeks before the full length record of the same name, the five-track taster features the title track and U Devil U off the new album.

But the obvious highlight for long-time fans of Joey Tempest and co. is the spellbinding live version of Superstitious. One of three live songs on the mini album, it screams quality with guitar slinger Jon Norum in fantastic form. Read the rest of this entry »

stryperChristian rock legends Stryper will return to the fray this summer with the release of new album Murder By Pride on the fabulous Frontiers Records.

And frontman Michael Sweet is promising a return to the band’s late 80s pomp coupled with a modern edge borne out of feedback from die hard fans. Stryper sold more than eight million records before splitting in 1992 but the US stars aim to celebrate their 25th anniversary in style with shows across the world. Read the rest of this entry »

tesla-download-1-resize@ Newcastle o2 Academy, June 15 2009

There is one reason Tesla were chosen to play the main stage at Download this year – one of the least heralded blues metal bands of the late 80s has always delivered, despite a criminal lack of critical acclaim. And if their Castle Donington set was brilliant yet brief, this headline show allowed Jeff Keith and co. the opportunity to remind Newcastle just why they were once one of America’s hottest properties. And why they could be again. Read the rest of this entry »

maiden-666@ Odeon Silverlink Newcastle, April 21 2009

The rockumentary is hardly a byword for serious film whether you’re talking the spoof classic that is Spinal Tap or the sad parody which revealed itself to be Anvil.

But then along come Iron Maiden to confirm that life for a band on the road – even a band as big as this – is a far cry from sex, drugs and rock n’ roll. In their case it’s more like jetlag, pizza and time taking its toll.

Flight 666 is no feckless fantasy. In fact it has the capability to brutally destroy the glorious metal dream as its stars emerge as the least egotistical, most hard working, affable and approachable men in rock. Read the rest of this entry »

Review – TSPE, Columbia & DRnR

sex-pistols-exp@ The Trojan Rooms, Whitley Bay, April 9 2009

There are quieter ways to start your Easter weekend but there are many less entertaining.

Add two of the North East’s fastest-rising rock bands to one of the nation’s biggest-selling tribute acts and you get a recipe for unbridled mayhem and an ear-blasting noise the like of which you may never have experienced before.

Dirty Rock And Roll continue to set the standard for raw rock in the region and this uber confident set in front of a potentially hostile crowd proved their punk rock credentials. How ironic, then, that this could be the last time Adam and the boys trade on their three-chord standards with rumours of a return to the trio’s classic rock roots sometime soon.

Judging by the emotive version of Fight which, even in the face of shaven headed punks, promised to bring the house down, that move can’t come soon enough. Read the rest of this entry »

Ghostly Goings On

tgoat2Whether landing inside Q Magazine’s Top Five Metal Bands (the popular monthly hardly has a reputation for unearthing rock’s rising stars) is good or bad remains open to debate but there’s no doubt The Ghost Of A Thousand are making waves across the board these days.

Signed to cult US indie label Epitaph and ready to release latest album New Hopes, New Demonstrations in June, the Brighton crew are ready to carve their name into hard rock history. And that process starts in earnest next Tuesday when TGOAT debut new single Bright Lights on the BBC Radio One Rock Show.

Now that particular programme may have gone downhill since the much missed Tommy Vance parted ways with the Beeb some years ago but it’s still a key platform for rockers young and old. And showcasing their new tune on national radio really can’t do the south coast quintet any harm at all. Read the rest of this entry »
