Tedeschi Trucks Band – Let Me Get By (Fantasy/Concord)

Genre: Rock/Country/Soul/Blues

The creative melting pot that is Jacksonville collective Tedeschi Truck Band could well have peaked with this quite brilliant feast of countrified rock and soul. Bubbling under since the criminally ignored (on this side of the Pond, at least) release of 2013’s sparkling Made Up Mind, this should be the record that propels TTB into rock’s big leagues.

Twelve-strong when performing live, the sense of instinctive flare that underpins the band’s celebratory shows is recreated here with understated aplomb. What initially feels like a series of hastily thrown together collaborations is, in fact, a lesson in focused yet free musicianship.

Derek Trucks’ decision to channel all of his considerable talent into the band that carries his name (and that of partner Susan Tedeschi) pays off big time. Let Me Get By is a giant leap forward from Made Up Mind – it’s less overtly commercial but so much more appealing as an all-consuming rock and soul trip.

Mike Mattison mixes things up by taking lead vocal duties on Crying Over You and Right On Time but it’s difficult to look beyond husband and wife team Tedeschi and Trucks when seeking out this record’s multiple highlights: their guitar duel on Don’t Know What It Means is simply divine.
