Man The Machetes – Av Nag (Indie Recordings)
Man The Machetes’ 2013 debut, Idiokrati, showed promise but felt short in songwriting nous. Av Nag, in contrast, is a very different proposition altogether: bursting with energy, brimming with hooks and fired by the Norwegians’ heartfelt passion, it’s an album which should see them standing toe to toe with hardcore punk luminaries like Gallows and Fucked Up.
From the off, the quintet mean business, with opener De Sier Nei! and its follow-up, Mennesketrapp, showing just how far the boys have come in a short space of time.
The fretwork crackles, Christopher Iversen delivers a searing vocal performance (in his native tongue) and the band have a masterful grasp of rhythmic dynamics, meaning Av Nag never seems to flounder or outstay its welcome.
Quite simply, there’s an urgency to the gritty, switchblade punk of Djevelens Dråper or Bak Det Perfekte which is infectious – it’s as if Man The Machetes are making up for lost time and making sure everyone listening is swept along with them.
Intelligently composed and played straight from the heart… Av Nag is a everything 21st century hardcore should be. Richard Holmes
